White After Labour Day: Fashion Faux Pas?

In this blog post, Olivia + Laura uncover the myth behind not being able to wear white after Labour Day.

This past week, I posted an outfit photo on Instagram featuring me wearing a pair of white pants well into September. To my surprise, it generated quite a buzz, with many people commenting on the age-old myth of not being able to wear white after Labor Day. Now we've all heard the myth but why is it a thing?

The idea of not wearing white after Labor Day has a questionable origin rooted in classism. Back in the late 19th century, it was a way for the old money elite to distinguish themselves from the nouveau riche, who had recently acquired wealth. This rule had little to do with fashion sensibility and everything to do with maintaining social stratification.

Now, there is no denying that it has no place in modern fashion. We are not bound by the outdated norms of the past. Wear whatever colors make you feel confident and express your personal style. Life is too short, and fashion is too fun to be limited by what others think.

With that in mind, let's explore how to style white pants for fall, proving that they can be a versatile and chic addition to your autumn wardrobe.

Fall Layering

Fall is all about layering. Throw on a neutral-toned or black trench coat or a chunky cardigan over your white ensemble for both style and comfort.

Darker Accessories

As the sun keeps setting earlier, opt for darker accessory shades such as deep burgundy or forest green handbags, jackets or boots to balance the brightness of white pants.

Fall Patterns

Don't hesitate to introduce fall-inspired patterns like plaid or houndstooth into your outfit or accessories. These patterns work harmoniously with white and exude sophistication.

Neutral Knits

You can never go wrong with a neutral knit for fall. Pair your white pieces with earthy hues like camel, olive, or rust for a cozy autumn look.

With these styling tips, you can confidently wear white throughout the season.

Thanks for reading this week's blog post! If you plan to use any of these tips in the coming weeks, be sure to share it with me over on Instagram!

Xoxo,

Laura from Olivia + Laura
